Job Description – Millbank Academy SENDCO (maternity cover)
Responsible to: The Head of School; the Trust Director of SEND
Start date: December 2022 (some flexibility possible for the right candidate)
Salary: Competitive, Inner London
We are looking for a teacher and senior leader to manage our provision for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities at Millbank Academy, including within our Additionally Resourced Provision for children with autism as it expands into its new home.
The Future Academies Trust is one of the country’s leading academy trusts; it was established with the intention of improving the life chances of children through an education that is built on the importance of knowledge, teachers who are experts in their subject, and an unwavering focus on raising aspirations for all. Our family of schools provide an exciting educational environment for pupils of all abilities, including pupils with complex Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The Trust hosts 3 Additionally Resourced Provisions, including the Windmill at Millbank Academy, and prides itself on making its mainstream classrooms both aspirational and inclusive.
Though this role is for a maternity cover, the school’s place within a Trust – including several within walking distance of Milbank – makes opportunities for long-term appointment and development very possible.
Millbank Academy is an OFSTED Outstanding school with an above-average percentage of children with EHCPs on its roll. In addition to this, it is the home of the Windmill, an Additionally Resourced Provision for pupils with a diagnosis of Autism.
If your application is successful, you will be leading a diverse team that includes a Speech and Language Therapist, a Deputy SENDCO, a Resource Base Lead Teacher, an HLTA and a team of Teaching Assistants. Educational Psychology is bought in to support with our understanding of pupils with complex needs.
If successful, you will be joining at an exciting time for the school in terms of its SEND provision. During the next academic year, the Windmill provision will increase from 10 places to 20, with the opening of brand new, purpose-built classrooms and facilities on-site.
You would work as the SENDCO while also providing direct leadership for the teachers and TAs in the Windmill, working alongside a Windmill Lead Teacher. You would get support from the Trust’s Director of SEND, as well as from the team of primary SENDCOs working within the Trust, and from Millbank’s Head of School.
The ideal candidate will have a desire to ensure that pupils with a variety of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) make outstanding progress in all lessons, especially pupils who have a diagnosis of autism. In particular, the post will appeal to a teacher with a passion for leadership, someone who is organised and efficient and who can implement the Trust’s vision for Inclusion as well as national changes in SEND practice.
To provide strategic direction and leadership of Inclusion. To raise levels of achievement for pupils with SEND. To ensure that pupils with SEND are suitably provided for in mainstream lessons, as well as through the specialist provision delivered within the Windmill. To provide direct line/performance management for Teaching Assistants and external agency staff.
Ensuring pupils with SEND, both within the mainstream school and the Windmill, make outstanding progress underpinned by quality-first teaching; ensuring the support delivered by Teaching Assistants and agency staff aides this progress.
Future Academies is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all members of staff and volunteers to share this commitment. An Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check is required for this post.
